In a world full of sexual immorality and a lack of commitment, it is difficult to locate Godly ideas of love. Lustfulness and impurity are constantly being flashed in our faces from the media and common culture. In contrast, the Bible does depict how love and sexuality should be treated. This can be found in the Song of Songs. The Song of Songs is also referred to as the Song of Solomon or Canticles (Whitlock, Sproul, Waltke, and Silva 1004). In Hebrew, the title can be translated as “Solomon’s Song of Songs” (Barker, Burdick 1020). The term “Song of Songs” means the greatest of all the songs (Whitlock, Sproul, Waltke, and Silva 1004). The Song of Songs is an expression of sexual love between a man and a woman (Alexander, Alexander 403). More specifically, this book speaks of the exclusivity of spousal love, its overwhelming power, and the preciousness of that love (Barker, Burdick 1021). Song of Songs is an exploration of the feelings, hopes, fears, and passion between a man and a woman (Alexander, Alexander 403). Sexual enjoyment and consummation are both a part of the overarching theme of love (Alexander, Alexander 403). Three qualities of this love are self-giving, desire, and commitment (Whitlock, Sproul, Waltke, and Silva 1003). Sex is either viewed as solely for physical pleasure by culture, or seen as something dirty within the church. Both of these are wrong ways to view sex. Song of Songs shows that a sexual relationship is a beautiful thing within a marriage. The church should not shy away from the discussion of sex because they do not see it as something pure. This leads to a misrepresentation of sex. When forced to choose between the two earlier descriptions of sex, it is easier to choose the worldly view. If not given the option of the greatness of sex within marriage, the next best option is viewing sex for physical pleasure. People should turn to the Song of Songs to see how a sexual relationship should be. They should know the Godly view of sex, rather than the worldly view or “church”
