The soldiers were and the danger faced on both side because there other soldiers were at the other side to fight the british. One of the officer had been hit on his left upper arm and was still holding a saber in his left hand and was jerking at Charley with his right hand. Charley started walking amid the explosions of shot and the ripping of bullets until he was clear of the smoke, and saw the other men walking with him. He thought that they could walk as they did in the rank. Charley wanted to kill the british, but he didn’t want to because he just wanted to catch them and run his bayonet through them and kill all of them. Everyone assumes that the North will win easily, with the fighting unlikely to last more than a month or two. As a volunteer army is beginning to form. In Charley’s first battle, near Manassas Junction, Virginia, in 1861, he got caught in the middle of the violent suffering to death. When the battle is over, hundreds of Charley’s comrades have been killed in what came to be called the Battle of Bull Run after the name of the creek that ran nearby. During the time Charley participates in the battle against the Confederate Army, the Union wins but the heavy casualties one of whom is Nelson and a man who had befriended only hours before. Nelson got shot in the stomach and knows that the surgeons do not have the skills or time to mend his wound. So he shoots himself with his own rifle on the battlefield.
