Socratic Seminar Reflection
After our class reading of Persepolis, by Marjane Satrapi, we participated in a Socratic seminar to discuss the book. Two separate discussions were held, and each person had to take part in one discussion and evaluate another classmate’s conduct in the other. During the seminar, we asked each other questions and shared our thoughts on the book. Doing the Socratic seminar helped me understand the book better and allowed me to get more out of reading it. To prepare for our Socratic seminar, I did the reading and the questions that were assigned, so I felt well prepared. It was beneficial to get to hear different points of view and how different people interpreted the book. I had been confused about the significance of the title since the beginning, and talking to my peers helped me understand. Participating in this seminar has benefited me in a number of ways. For one thing, I know how to do Socratic seminars now. I’m sure I’ll be doing more in the future, and I’m glad that I know what to do now. The seminar also helped me understand Persepolis better. It’s a complex book, and talking to others about it helped me gain a deeper understanding. I also really enjoyed participating in the Socratic seminar and talking to my peers about the book.
Throughout the process of preparing for our Socratic seminar, I learned a lot. I learned how to critically analyze a text, how to verbalize my ideas more clearly, and how to conduct myself during a Socratic seminar. I feel prepared for any future discussions I will participate in and for reading other complex texts in the future. The Socratic Seminar required teamwork, higher level thinking, and a mature attitude, and I think that our group demonstrated all of those
