Drugs have been an economic, social, and health concern for many years. Whether they are legal or illegal; drugs affect an individual differently in the immediate and over time. There are positive and negative effects of using drugs. Some positive effects include controlling pain, relieving stress, and assisting in the healing process. The negative aspects of illegal drugs may be the effect on one’s future, social aspects, and may lead to deviant actions. Crime rates have been shown to increase significantly when illegal drugs are present. Some drugs have been shown to cause behavioral changes which may result in individuals engaging in delinquent actions. Using drugs may cause mood changes if they are not used properly under medical direction. The use of illegal drugs may lead to violence among friends and family. There are other ways that drugs may result in violence. While under the influence of some drugs, the individual may not realize their actions are unacceptable behaviors and may be illegal. Some drug use may distort reality for those under the influence resulting in trouble differentiating between fact and fiction and what really happened or what didn’t happen. Individuals who are raised in homes where drugs are used are more likely to become users. Some individuals use drugs because it’s a way to ease physical and emotional pain and stress.
