Chapter 12 talks about the paid work role and health. An interesting point of this chapter was that hostile environment sexual harassment is more likely to happen to women who work in nontraditional occupations. They are seen by males as a threat to their jobs by rejecting traditional female gender roles. Some believe that sexual harassment is used as a form of punishment for not complying with prescription components of gender role stereotypes and as a way to maintain the status difference (Helgeson 482). This point is important because it might help to understand the nature and origin of sexual harassment in the workplace. It might also help identify situations where hostile environment sexual harassment is more prone to occur. A connection to this point could be …show more content…
While men tend to prefer to work with things, women tend to prefer to work with people (Helgeson 456-457). This is a interesting point because it might be part of the reason why women and men are more likely to choose a certain kind of job and why some jobs have a higher rate of male or female workers. A point that connects to this is interaction and behaviour styles in men and women. Men’s behaviour is more task oriented, hierarchical and directive and this might explain why they tend to value challenge, power, high income and recognition more than women. Their task orientated and directive behaviour might also be an indicator of why men tend to prefer to work with things. On the other hand women’s behaviour tends to be more supportive and cooperative, which might explain why they tend to value and look for good relations with coworkers and supervisors and the opportunity to work with people (Helgeson
