Sociological imagination
Charles Wright Mills was an American sociologist and was also a sociology professor at Columbia University. Besides being a sociologist Mills was famous for writing his book “The Sociological Imagination.” The textbook definition of sociological imagination is the skill to recognize the links between our own experiences and the bigger forces of history. This idea is explained within Mills book “Sociological Imagination” which is a factual based book on this concept. Sociological imagination is also expressed in the movie “China Blue,” which is a documentary about a manager and a little girl in the workforce in china. This movie is a documentary about how the workforce in china is really managed. This movie shows two different sides the managers side and a sixteen-year-old workers side. The manager thinks that he is a great employer who feels taken advantage of by his workers and he had also stated that he feels like he worked really hard to go from having nothing to being the manager of his own company. On the other hand, the workers including the little girl feel like they are being overworked, forced to lie to other people about their situation, and they don’t get enough breaks. The two sides of these stories are unaware of how each other’s feel. This is an example of sociological imagination because the manager of this company is unaware of the pain and suffering that these workers feel and all he cares about is making his deadline. Also all visitors are unaware that the workers get no breaks, they have to work almost every hour of the day with only four hours of sleep, and that they only get paid half a yuan. All in all, sociological imagination can be used to shape us by our social environment. It is very important in the world of sociology. This concept of understanding the bigger picture in the world was deeply expressed throughout the book “Sociological Imagination,” and the movie “China blue.” Both of these pieces are very moving and will easily help you better understand what sociological imagination
