In the article, “The Effects of Gender and Family, Friend, and Media Influences on Eating Behaviors and Body Image During Adolescents, the authors mentioned how females are more at risk of developing eating disorders which is more of a psychosocial factor, than males, whose behaviors are formed from low parental support and the pressure of being muscular (Ata, Lally, & Ludden, 2007). Media aren’t the only factor to blame. Families and peers are also part of body dissatisfaction of others. For example, someone can grow up in a home where they get made fun of by a family member for not being thin and comparing one to another. Also in school children get made fun of for anything. Children get made fun of because of their size, shape, and beauty substantially. In the article, “Social Comparison and Body Image in Adolescence: a grounded theory approach”, the authors mentioned, “Asking adolescents not to compare themselves to one another is unlikely to be successful. During adolescence, a challenging phase of maturation, social comparison provides a means of gathering information about the social world. Participants will be given 1 survey, which will be a questionnaire. A correlational study will be conducted to determine how often societal influences effects college student’s body image. The type of correlational study that will be used is an observational study. The survey would be available online for some students to take, whose emails are easily accessed. Also students can take a survey in the student union on paper. The survey given will be a questionnaire made by the conductor of the research based on appearances, peer pressure from society, and many more. The types of questions that will be used will ask if the person feel pressured to change their appearance and how satisfied they are with their body and self. The test will show if an individual is affected by social influences and if so how often from a scale of 1 to 5, 1 being not affected or not often to 5 being very affected or very
