It’s important for us to self-regulate in order to understand our feelings and physical needs. (Tooley, 2017) Professor Sarah Keiser explains how important it is to learn self-care as social work students, to recognize stress and learn how to cope with stress.
Being in a school system, a social worker sees their mandated students throughout the entire school year, unless earlier terminated from services. One of my students that I have been working with since the beginning of the school year is one that I see has changed the most. They started off doing poorly in school and didn’t have motivation to do well. A few months in the school year, my student was going through some difficult family situations which led his grades to drop a little more. He wasn’t doing his homework, as he would go home and play video games.
By providing this student with strategies to do better in school and to pull his grade up, he started to becoming a little motivated. He started getting more of his homework done, finding ways to get to school on time, and became interested in becoming a movie editor. This student may have a difficult time keeping his motivation for the following school year during the summer. There is a chance that he may have to attend summer school; therefore, that may help his motivation continue to doing well in school from the start of the next year. Doing poorly in school and attending summer school are risk factors that students have that may led them into drugs and bad behaviors.
