Personal Narrative: My Passion For The Field Of Social Work

Improved Essays
Although Social Work is my minor and Criminal Justice is my major I have a deep passion for the field of Social Work. I was homeless at the age of four years old when my grandmother died. At that time I lived in the Queen Louise homeless shelter on Saint Croix for six months with mother. My father is an immigrant and my mother was a foster child. My mother was also in an abusive relationship for six years of my childhood. Six years that felt like a century. My parents would not be who they are today without the help of Social Workers. My mother had her first child at sixteen. Due to this she was kicked out of her parents’ house and was taken in by a foster family. My father immigrated to the U.S Virgin Islands in 1986 from Micoud, …show more content…
During my first Social Work class I realized how important public speaking is, in this field. I have also noticed how important attendance is. I get very nervous with speaking in front of large crowds, partly because of my accent. I am able to hide my accent really well but it is not very hard to determine that I am not from the U.S from talking to me. I am not ashamed of where I from. However, I am very annoyed by the questions that come with being different.
My short term goals are to be a case manager or probation officer. My long term goal is to be either a criminal or immigration lawyer. Maybe there is a way that I would be able to do both. I believe that the background of Social Work will help me to be competent in my field. This field has not only taught me to be culturally competent but also to be more accepting of others.
Competence is an area that I am most skilled in. I am always interested in learning about new cultures. In addition, I am able to engage and communicate with diverse populations. I am extremely self-aware and I am able to feel empathy for people. Having boundaries is another skill that is essentially important to this

It determines what is good, bad, beneficial, important and not accepted. My long term goal is to become a criminal or immigration social worker. The background of social worker will help me tremendously. Having the social work background gives me the knowledge of being culturally competent. I doubt the field of law would proud me with this type of skill. As an immigration lawyer with a social work background I will be interested in not only helping my clients but also advocating for them.
My personal values are congruent to those of Social Work. Ever since I decided to minor in Social Work Cultural Competence has been very important to me. I have realized that being culturally competent is more than just race and ethnicity. Being culturally competent social workers are concerned with helping others who have disabilities, aging adults, gays, bisexuals, lesbians and transgender. One of the strengths I have developed within social work, was creating an awareness of my own personal biases. This was a tool that I learned very early in the BSW program. I understand that Nakita the person and Nakita the social worker must always remain separate in issues of conflict. Being aware of what my own personal biases are and ensuring that I’m culturally competent, helps me to be a better social worker for clients who may have opposing beliefs and values as me. Also, learning about my biases humbled me and helped me to realize that there is no room for bias in social justice.…

If a client came in to see me at a social service center needing a place to stay, my first step would be to engage the client by establishing a professional relationship with them. This means making sure that the client understands that while I will care about them, the purpose of the relationship is to work together and equip them to address problems in their life. From there we would establish why they believe that they are seeing a social worker and begin to form a plan from there. Secondly, we would begin to analyze their strengths in their current situation to determine a path of action.…

As I travel through this educational journey I am starting to realize that social work is a profession that chose me. It is a profession for individuals with a strong desire to help people cope with issues in their everyday lives, some work with special populations and work in specific settings. The ability to adjust and adapt to change is an important characteristic of a social worker because people are constantly changing as well as their environment. As a professional, and as implied in the NASW; the social worker must always do what is in the best interest of the client. Social workers swear by the code of ethics which places major emphasis on practicing ethics and decision making.…

The population that I want to work, ideally, is veterans. They are the reason that I switched from psychology to social work, as I noticed the VA hires social workers, but not therapist. This is how I found out that what social workers actually do, a sad fact considering I took an intro to social work for my AA. If I were unable to work with veterans, there are limited organizations in NJ that focus on their needs specifically with the VA being the main organization. My “second” choice would be adults that experienced trauma, may it be in their childhood or as an adult.…

My question had been answered my second day on the job, while I was slapping a fresh coat of royal blue paint on the hot metal bench. My drive for becoming a social worker comes from my life experiences and situations I’ve seen my own family go through. When my parents first came to the United States twenty-five years ago, it was difficult adapting for them. I think that this was when I first realized I wanted to do something helping others in need. I remember feeling helpless as a child not being able to better my parent’s situation or being able to talk to them in English. I also felt very angry when my parents were discriminated or laughed at for not knowing American culture or language.…
