It’s been plenty of times I conducted a home visit and the client wasn’t interested in participating in the session. It has been times when a client would just walk out in the middle of the session. Sessions like that are disheartening. Even from an early age, I always recognized that social workers are not the most celebrated or appreciated profession. Some people will even vilify social workers because of the common misconception that all social workers take children from their homes. For that reason, sometimes I find it very annoying to explain that I’m a social work major. It is even more annoying when I have to explain the variety of services that a social worker could give and the reason why I chose the profession. In addition, I also learned that social work is not a field that people necessarily rush towards. It was also surprising to me that graduate schools are so selective to accept people that apply. Even before I was eligible to apply to graduate school, I had to raise my GPA from a 2.0 to at least a 2.5. I suppose that’s for good reasons as well. I had found solace in my field supervisor for my field practicum. Being able to talk to my field supervisor, helps me come up with different interventions that I can utilize with the clients. My field supervisor also offers a listening ear to whatever problems or concerns I have with the clients. I able to vent my frustrations to her and she offers great advice on how to handle certain situations. She encouraged me to allow clients to depend on me because it will wear me out. I discovered that it is a lot easier to do for people than give resources and education. If I have ten clients that depend on me completely to solve their problems for them, then I’ll have to do that for the next ten and the ten after that and so on and so
