Social Psychology: Similarities And Differences

Superior Essays
Social Psychology is a diverse subject with many interesting parts. In this comparative study I delve into four facets of the Social Psychology subject. Using myself, and my friend Merrill I show how persons can relate with one another and have very different social situations. The subjects of attitude, interpersonal relationships, gender issues and attachment styles are used to create a comparison. Using two individuals of similar age, and social status to prove that all aspects of Social Psychology can be similar, but yet different.
Keywords: Attitude, interpersonal relationships, gender issues, attachment styles.

According to the book attitude is our feelings toward a person, thing, or group (Principles of social Psychology, 2012, pg.27). Marili and my thoughts about certain groups are very different, especially for one group, the alcoholic. Merrill was raised in a household where there was no drinking at all, and his parents did not believe that drinking was appropriate. In my household I had two parents that drank frequently, and my mother is an alcoholic. Because of this type of household Merrill’s approach to drinkers is one of distain, and negativity. He does not believe in drinking to excess, and feels that alcoholics are not sick at all. I on the other hand though I do not drink, but feel differently towards alcoholics. I have been in a relationship with two functioning alcoholics, and believe that a person does not choose to be an alcoholic. Even though we both detest alcohol each of our reasoning’s are different, and our attitudes towards alcoholics are vastly …show more content…
Attachment styles are the way that a person relates to someone in a close relationship (Principles of social Psychology, 2012, pg. 418). This type of style can be shown with all kinds of close relationships friendship, romantic, and even family interaction. For my attachment style I would say for my mother that we created a healthy attachment style. She was always a little overbearing, and I tend to push her away, but we have a pretty close relationship. My father is a different story he was always very distant, and therefore I tend to be very attached to my significant others I believe this is me trying to replace what I was missing in a male role model. My relationships seem to be a little distant and detached for friends. Merrill is a little different his mother was very over bearing and it caused him to have an unhealthy relationship with her. They do not talk at all now, and his father is no better. Merrill is very attached to his wife and kids, and would do anything to keep the relationship. He is very over attached to his spouse perhaps to make up for the lack of other relationships. I would say that him and I are very similar when it comes to our attachment styles since we both have a lack of healthy relationship with one

There are a few alcoholics in my kin as well as affiliated kin which is my husbands biological family. For my family my father was always an alcoholic, ever since I can remember. There were times were he would get angry when drinking alcohol, but never to the extent of being afraid of him. Not once did he ever lay a finger on anyone in my family, instead he resulted in a mute anger and kept to himself. Those occasions were quite rare, but did in fact happen which ultimately resulted with the divorce of my parents.…

I think that her rocking me has played a significant role in our attachment. I am very close with my mother, my most secure attachment is with her, and the assessment confirmed that. The assessment told me that my global attachment style was dismissing. People that have a dismissive attachment style tend to prefer their own autonomy (“Relationship Structures”). I agree that I do prefer to make decisions for myself, but this is because my parents have encouraged me to do so.…

In other words, alcoholism is an illness that makes people act on impulse and they will most likely regret their decision in the long run. In both The Black Cat and in real life when a person drinks too much liquor they lose a sense of who they are. The narrator states that “returning home, much intoxicated… I knew myself no longer” this quote tells the audience that he no longer controlled his actions but his emotions took over (Poe 5). In Alcoholism: Is It a Disease the author states that “First,…

When it came to important matters, such as sexuality, dating, violence in relationships, and finances, both of my parents took on the role of talking to us equally. Both of my parents always let my brother and I know that they would love us no matter what sexual orientation, a “preference for sexual parents of the same sex, the opposite sex, both sexes, or neither sex,” we were (Benokraitis, 2015). This made my brother and I feel very comfortable because we knew that we could talk to our parents about sexuality if we ever needed to. With that said, however, I do not remember a specific time where our parents gave us the “sex talk,” and even though we never received that talk from them we did receive it in other places like health class.…

I do not have a good relationship with my step-dad even if he has “mellowed” out on his drinking. Even though these events were tragic to a child my age at the time, I feel that it has made me a better person. Today, I have a personal relationship with God because my best friend’s family took me to church every Sunday and Wednesday, I have a strong work ethic, and I do not drink to the point where I am drunk and inebriated. I also feel as if I have learned to be a better parent to my own daughter by not repeating the “mistakes” that my mother had made. It has been debated if alcoholism is really a disease.…

The behaviour of an individual and the relationships they have – whether it’s platonic, romantic or familial – can be traced back to early childhood - as early as infancy even. Bowlby (1977) defines attachment as; “an enduring emotional bond which an individual forms to another person.” In other words, attachment is a strong tie an individual has with special figures in their lives, in whom they place great trust in. When they interact with these special figures, they feel joy and experience pleasure, likewise, in times of distress, they turn to them to seek comfort.…
