The social order theme relates to the various rules, regulations, and social structures that maintain and enforce a productive society. In the novel Lord of the Flies, a group of boys was being evacuated to an unnamed destination. Their plane crashed and was drug out to sea, leaving the boys stranded on an unfamiliar island where there were no adults, no social institutions, and no order to mimic the social organization that they thought would reflect the adult world. They knew that social order was the only thing keeping civilization from breaking down, so they created a government of their own. They were all supposed to participate in building the infrastructure of the society, however temporary they expected it to be, and to support the activities that would promote their survival. The first example of the social order shown was when Ralph and Piggy found the conch and Piggy decided to use it as a trumpet to call any other survivors of the plane crash. They could have sat around and waited but this choice was a way to organize the situation. The main character, Ralph, was selected as the leader because of the conch, which he used to assemble everyone. It was shown that he was elected leader due to the conch since one boy said, “Let’s vote- … Him with the shell. Ralph! Ralph! Let him be chief with the trumpet-thing.” The conch was made to organize the meetings between the boys; without it, the meetings would’ve disintegrated into shouting and talking at the same time. Jack also wanted to be chief. He even said, “I ought to be chief because I’m chapter chorister and head boy. I can sing C sharp.” After not being picked, Ralph wanted to offer something to Jack. Ralph let him decide that since he was the leader of the choir, that he would make his boys hunters, and he would lead it. He became appointed to all tasks related to food
