Social Media College Essay

There are two type of college students, those that have a social life and are always keeping up with the latest trends, and those individuals considered “old souls” who have no niche for social media. I am of the latter. Being born in the age of technology does not give me magical social skills or technology skills, which almost every other college student seems to possess. Technology surrounds me everywhere I go and yet I feel so clueless when I need to utilize it, especially when it comes to social media. My social life is not at all what it appears to be for the average college student. I can only represent a small portion of college students in the nation; those who have used social media for purposes other than socializing, and those who avoid social media by all means possible. I only opened two apps during the entire day, a total of three times, and I only used it in a socially active way twice. The results were not surprising to me, but the results left me questioning why I don’t use social media. While the answer may have been simple to answer when I was twelve and I did not have access to social media, it cannot be answered so casually today. Some might say that my personality contributes to my lack of social media usage, and I would agree with them. As my own unique character, I have always preferred doing things my way differently than the masses. The way I see it, if I use social media about five hours a day, that is precious time wasted that could have been better used for doing things to help me reach my personal goals. Social media may not be my niche and it really has to do with the way social media serves as a distraction.
