Parties were thrown after the opera and this is how the ruling class spent their time. People would spend money on everything, even throwing dinner parties for women to honor their dogs and allowing the dog to wear a $15,000 diamond collar (PBS, 1999). The rich wore diamonds and spent money on ridiculous accessories they had sewing machines, phonographs, skyscrapers, and even electric lights (PBS, 1999). Electricity was created and had a dramatic advance that the rich had access to, helping create power and how we see things, it helped machines work and enhanced the business world. This is describing that people are depressed even when they look good on the outside. Just as the rich seemed happy and glamourous, they had problems of their own. The poor weren’t the only ones that lived a hard life, money brings problems too. This is why it is so important to strive for God and a relationship with Christ. He is the one who can bring fulfillment and hope, not money or any earthy possessions.
The Gilded Ages, were a difficult time. It was made up of a high upper class and a great amount of poor people. Through this time, it has shaped our country to how it is today. Without all the entrepreneurs and great business men creating jobs and great inventions, America would not be the country it is today. The great accomplishments they went through we take for granted and we must be reminded to treasure all that we have.
