The individual observed was a 71 year old female who currently resides in a two-story town home in Fleetwood, Pennsylvania. She lives with her daughter, granddaughter, and great granddaughter. It is said that disengagement occurs after the loss of a spouse and retirement, which in this case may be entirely true. As stated earlier, the individual has retired nine years ago and has been through multiple marriages failing along with the death of her latest husband. As far as social activity goes, she will consistently go to the beauty salon to get her hair done and go for lunch with one of her co-workers on occasion. She stated that she has friends but they are more like acquaintances rather than what most people would define as friends and most of the time it is only a work related relationship. According to Rowe and Kahn’s components of successful aging, one might say that it is questionable as to how many categories she is compliant with. She meets the standards of category one by avoiding disease and disability but unfortunately doesn’t quite make the cut in categories two and three. As previously discussed she also is removing herself from a few but not all active engagements in life. While it may seem like she has a high cognitive and physical functional capacity, it is only temporary. She was put on Alzheimer’s medication over two years ago and it seems to have hit every generation prior to her (PAGE 203 SITE). In this case, her overall function will only decline as time progresses (PAGE 41
