Social Conflict Theory

The theory that plays a part in cyberbullying is the conflict theory. “Social conflict theory is a macro-oriented paradigm in sociology that views society as an arena of inequality that generates conflict and social change. Key elements in this perspective are that society is structured in ways to benefit a few at the expense of the majority, and factors such as race, sex, class, and age are linked to social inequality. To a social conflict theorist, it is all about dominant group versus minority group relations. Karl Marx is considered the 'father' of social conflict theory.” (Moffitt) The conflict theory can be applied to the issue of cyberbullying because of the conflict that comes from the bully and the person being bullied interactions online or in person. Conflict also comes into play in other parts of the bully and the victims lives such as their relationships with families and friends. “Conflict as a process is defined as a confrontation between individuals, or groups, over scarce resources, controversial means, incompatible goals, or combination of these.” (White & Klein, 2002)

Attempting to resolve the conflict requires negotiation and consensus. “Negotiation happens when both parties state their goals and then use their resources to induce or coerce the other to move closer to their goal.” (White & Klein, 2002) This requires both parties to be willing to cooperate with one another to hear the other person out to come to reaching a middle ground or goal. “Consensus means agreement. Consensus is achieved when parties to a negotiation agree.” (White & Klein, 2002) An example of negotiation is when a someone being bullied and the bully actually agree to sit down and hash out why it is the conflict is occurring and how they can move forward and agree that the bullying needs to come to a
