Rather than reflecting on his adolescence and personal experience, Mike Rose brings the story of his mother. In the setting of his mother’s restaurant with her having the occupation of a waiter, Rose was able to pick up and fully analyze his mother’s work and hardship. Personally, I was astonished to Mike Rose’s standpoint and approach, to a job like of his mother having intellectual importance. Mike Rose goes deeper into his observations and claims at the restaurant while he was a kid as he states, “I’ve since studied the working habits of the blue-collar workers and have come to understand how much my mother’s kind of work demands of both body and brain.” (Rose 1034). The workload that Mike Rose’s mother was able to adjust and balance while still maintaining a healthy and welcoming personality to restaurant customers was not viewed not only admirable but also honorable by the eyes of adolescent Rose himself. Another distinguished aspect of Rose’s excellent experience in observing his mother is the fact that her level of education wasn’t exactly that of an upper-class prestigious person. It was not what you’d expect such an excellent and intelligent worker such as herself to have. One’s education does wistfully build upon on where your social class stature lies. With this being said, however, how can we expect anyone from a town or city that is considered poor or disadvantaged to have nearly the same knowledge and education; the same chances that someone of a higher class position will have. This is a very disapproving fact, as not everyone gets the same opportunity for an optimal education due to the standing of a family 's economic and social status. Many people day after day fail to realize, however, that knowledge and teaching in some areas are unique and present in many forms other than school. Both Graff and Rose were able to leech and strive for intellectual ability, not solely based on education, but rather experience. Those part of the higher social classes is more likely to have greater educational attainment than those residing in the low social classes. Members of upper social classes tend to be better educated resulting in better work fields and higher incomes, they are more able to provide their children with educational advantages.
