Social and community psychology aims to understand how people are influenced by and relate to their society. It is believed that people develop through the influences of their surroundings or social context and these influences can either have a positive or a negative impact on a person’s life. Positive affects cause a person to live a happy and meaningful life while negative affect may cause stress or depression, resulting in one living an unhappy and meaningless life. In this section of the assignment, we are going to apply social and community psychology theories to the case study. According to the model, the ecological systems often overlap into each other and they operate or work together to influence the development of a person (Erasmus, 2015). According to Bronfenbrenner, in order to understand a person, one must consider the ecological systems in which they develop or grow. This system refers to a person’s immediate social setting which they may be involved in. relating to the case study, Thapelo, Lerato, Sipho and Kele all belong to the micro system because they are a family and they also live in Johannesburg. Thapelo also fits into the micro system of teachers while Lerato is in the micro system of accountants. Secondly, there is the mesosystem which involves the interaction of two micro systems. These are external relationships that directly influence a person’s life even though they may not be directly involved in that relationship. A parent’s workplace can have an influence on the family or a child. In the case study, Thapelo complains of having back pains. If he ends up not being able to go to work due to his enduring pain, the family’s finances may be affected because no salary or cash flow would be coming in and Sipho might be forced to drop out of school because his parents would not afford his school
