The Progressive Era
The Progressive Era was a period of widespread social activism and political reform across the United States. During this ear activists and reformers from various backgrounds ad very different agendas pressed for their goals of a better America. Reformers were reacting to the challenges that face the country at the end of the nineteenth century like immigration, corruption, industrial working conditions and women’s right just to name a few. Different causes shared some underlying elements each movement largely focused on its own goals.
The Muckrakers (a group of Journalists and writers) were responsible for the spark that ignited the progressive movement. Muckrakers exposed problems in the American society and urged the public to identify solutions for them. No matter what the problem was the Muckrakers bought to the light and provoked outraged response from Americans. President Theodore Roosevelt knew many Muckrakers journalist well and consider himself as progressive. In the south African Americans communities developed their own progressive reform projects. These projects involved the upgrading the schools, modernizing church operations, searching equal rights and many others. These reform projects were notable in the rural areas, where most of southern African Americans lived. George Washington Carver was well known for his research for these projects.
Thirdly, I’ll discuss education during the progressive reform. The progressive sought to reform and modernize schools at the local level during the Era there was a dramatic expansion in the number of schools and students served. During the progressive era many states began to purse compulsory schooling laws.
In conclusion these were just a few of the major issues that accrued during the Progressive era. These were the few that I really was interested
