According to U.S. Official News, “Smoking is the most preventable cause of death in the United States” (Smoking: Do you know the Risks? 2015). The highest percent of smokers are between the ages of 21-34. It is said that smokers usually die more than 10 years earlier than those who don’t smoke. Today, there is much urgency for men and women to take an incentive to stop smoking cigarettes because most importantly it harms oneself. It is said smoking “for a man, it is not gallant, noble, and doesn’t show strength of character” (Sasman 23). Put simply, “a woman should quit for the sake of love; a man should quit for the sake of courage” (Sasman 23). Most anti-tobacco education and advertising predominantly focus on the basic risks such as lung cancer and heart disease but fail to go in depth on the effects on one’s strength and physical appearance, the effects on newborns and the mother, diseases such as impotence (erectile dysfunction) that targets men and …show more content…

Smoking also has profound effects on placental development and function, including calcification, which may result in placental tissue necrosis and fibrosis. Other effects include placenta previa, a condition in which the placenta partially or wholly blocks the neck of the uterus, separation of the placenta from the wall of the uterus and rupture of the amniotic sac more than one hour before the onset of labor. All of which contribute to low birth weight, pre-term birth and increased perinatal mortality: SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).
