The theme isn’t directly shown in the short story as the play was. The theme was developed more in the play because the schoolmaster was more supernatural. Although they are different they are also similar. The theme is the same because they both tell us not to count our chickens before they hatch. When Ichabod Crane plans on getting married to Katrina and then after the party, he vanishes with the help of Brom Bones.
However, the characters are mostly the same, but they still are different. In the short story there are more people at the Van Tassel’s party then there was in the play. Also, there was a lot more students that the schoolmaster taught then there was in the play. Since some of the characters were different, there are also some that stayed the same. The main characters, Ichabod Crane, Katrina Van Tassel, Brom Bones, and Katrina’s parents all have the same personality traits as in the short story.
Another Example of how the story and the play relate and differ are in the plot. In both accounts they both go through telling about Ichabod Crane and his career as a schoolmaster and his earlier years. In addition Ichabod goes to Katrina’s party, and then after the party gets hit in the head by the headless horseman. In Contrary, In the play it leaves out one little idea. In the short story it states that the schoolmaster goes to his student’s homes to sleep, and they leave that part out in the
