I feel, cold. I am swarmed by my surroundings. They pound away at my head and I can only sit here, helpless, unable to breathe, drowning. I wake up in bed. I have thin layers on but I am still scorching. A thick layer of sweat keeps me stuck to my bed sheet. A tear rolls down my face and drips from my face to the ground. It is so dark that I can’t tell whether my eyes are open or closed. My head swivels over to my alarm clock. It reads 12:04. I could’ve sworn it was morning. I lay there for what seems like an eternity, until I finally drift asleep. My mother wakes me up and my vision is blurry. I soon can make out that it is still dark out. Everyone is a blur up there because they are so far away, yet I know for a fact it is her. My world freezes again and I start to panic. I try and force myself to snap out of it, but it doesn’t work. I have no idea what will happen next. I finally come to my senses in the stands. What? How can that be! There is no way I got undressed from my uniform and followed the band all the way up here while I was hallucinating. I am so confused and I don’t know what to do. But for once, I make an executive decision to just ignore it. It can’t be to hard, right? Well I was wrong. It pestered my mind for the entire time other bands competed. Why does this always happen to

I evoke waking up every 5 minutes checking my blue IPod to see the time. Every time I woke up I would look outside my gelid, frosted window and see the sky darken to a faint violent. As the sky lightens, I would awaken even more. Just as the clock hit 7:30 A.M. sharp my alarm went off, “beep, beep, beep” desiring that I had gotten more sleep. I had opened my eyes like I had 50 cups of coffee, and jumping out of bed like a deer running from its predator.…

Walking on to the Lucas Oil turf as a Carmel Marching Greyhound for awards at Grand National finals after an exhilarating performance of “What a Tangled Web We Weave” was a feeling of pure accomplishment. As a sophomore, I had done this once before, but this time was different. The whole band knew we were in the running for the national title. Avon and Broken Arrow were our biggest competitors. Earlier in the season we won ISSMA state, so coming into nationals we knew we had a pretty good chance of being exceptionally good.…

The adrenaline was pumping through my veins and I couldn’t stop despite the fact that my lungs felt as if there were icy shards lodged in my chest. Haunted figures of the men that destroyed my life as I knew it flashed before my eyes as I lept over crates and pushed down trash cans behind me, my path marked by a riddled maze of rotted food and old possessions. The tears in my eyes were no longer tears, but streaks of moisture…

Sometimes in my dreams I think I’m in a somber place, in a dark train station. It is freezing. The noise is deafening: the screech of the metal brakes, the unintelligible blaring of a loudspeaker and voices chattering in an inscrutable language. It smells like oil, garlic, and sweat. My stomach is snarling, my toes are frozen and I’m wrapped up so tightly I’m unable to move.…

With snot dripping from my nose; a box of seemingly useless Kleenexes to the side of the bed, the seconds tick by one after the other. Each minute seeming as long as, or longer than, an hour.…
