In several of the literary pieces we read during this class, racism and slavery were a main issue.
Racism is just as much of an issue in our society today as it has been throughout our nations history and while we have made strides towards equality with the abolishment of slavery, we still have long way to go in the fight for equality.

In America today, groups like the KKK are still very prevalent in some areas of our nation, and while they do not still carry out the horrific acts they did during them time that slavery was in effect, they still spread hate and racist ideals through our society. Hate groups like this one and several others make up only a small percentage of
America, but they still have a voice, especially in the south. In the south, racism is still a very prevalent issue. Derogatory names and racial slurs are still the norm in many southern states, just like they were during the time of slavery. The confederate flag is still flown proudly in many parts of the south, and while some say it is not racist, it represents racist ideals that were fought for during the civil war. Police brutality is something that is also very similar now as it was during the time after slavery was abolished. Just this week, a video was leaked of an African

Caucasians. African Americans can also be racist towards white people and their culture. Just last night, an African American man killed 5 white police officers in my hometown of Dallas,
Texas. He stated that he wanted white people to die, especially white police officers. By definition, this is racism also.
While there are many ways that racism is the same in todays society as it was hundreds of years ago, there are also many ways that it is different. In todays society racism is being fought against by so many more people. Children today are learning that all people are created equal, and that no matter your race, gender, sexuality or religion you are equally important.
