M is presented as being level headed and willing to take risks in order to get the job done (as seen when she gives the order to shoot, despite the possibility of killing Bond). However, like more women in positions of power the males surrounding her, despite the fact that she out ranks them, often talk down to her. This constant power struggle is represented through a number of visceral techniques throughout the film. During her meeting with Gareth Mallory (who after M’s death becomes the new M), when he suggests she steps down as leader of MI6, the scene begins with Mallory standing above M before switching them being at an equal height length. However, by the end of scene M is standing above him, taking back her power and role as the leader. This use of film techniques is the main contributor to showing who has most – or all – of the power in the relationship between the characters. As the film goes on changes are made to M’s character and the visceral representation changes.
