Skydiving: Diving into Math You are falling fast. You can see the ground, but how do you know when to open the parachute? Do you have the right parachute? There are many situations in skydiving where you could risk death, but there is a way to have a carefree, safe trip down; use math. There are many uses for math in skydiving such as formulas, measurements, shapes, and rates. If you use all of these math concepts correctly, you should have a great time skydiving.
In skydiving there are few formulas you will need to know to stay alive. A formula is a mathematical relationship or rule expressed in symbols. Unlike some other sports, skydiving involves the risk of death each and every time. There are calculations, but inside of those calculations

Shapes are external forms or appearance characteristics of someone or something, the outline of an area or figure. The first style of parachute was a circular parachute that had a square frame holding it up. This kind of parachute is called the pyramid due to the way it shapes when filled with air. Today, circular parachutes are commonly used, but frames are no longer used. This style of parachute is now called a conical parachute due to the way it looks filled with air. Professional skydivers prefer to use square parachutes which reduce swinging movements. The last kind of parachute is the ram-air parachute which is rectangular shaped and one of the easiest to …show more content…
Each of these body shapes will change your speed. The most common shape has your arms and legs spread out, this helps you have control over your body and rate of descent. Another shape people make with their body could be with their arms and legs up against their body, this helps you pick up speed and increase your terminal velocity. A rate is a special ratio in which the two terms are in different units. A ratio is a comparison of two numbers or measurements. There is one basic rate in skydiving that is very important. All mathematics in skydiving is based off of the rate you will fall at. The rate you and everything on this planet falls at is 9.8m/s² (meters per second). You increase at this rate until you reach terminal velocity. If you did not know this rate of your fall, you would never be able to skydive safely.
In skydiving you use many types of basic math. You use formulas to calculate your speed, length of your fall, and shape of your parachute. You use measurements to find the height of your fall and the size of your parachute. You use shapes in making parachutes and increasing your speed. You use ratios to know your speed. Finally, you also use time to count the seconds or minutes till you hit the ground. Skydiving is a fast, complex sport, if you can not keep up you will not

The Anthropocene Humans have always wanted to be the makers of their own destiny, in some way or another. I always liked that quality; it makes us tenacious in the face of disaster. And indeed, we end up succeeding more often than not. Our wish to leave a legacy has managed to shift mountains, flatten hills, and has been known to block out the sun on occasion. Our impact is comparable to the massive roaming glaciers of the post ice age epoch, Holocene.…
