The“Sky Burial”, by Author Xue Xinran, is based on the 1950s. It begins with a Reporter ,Xinran, who asks Shu wan, the main character, about her story in Tibet. The most Important attributes of culture in this story are the Important historic events, Customs and Traditions, Food, Music, and Religion. The historic events listed in “Sky Burial” are Important because it tells what happened in the past that made the future. On October 7, 1950, 80,00 chinese PLA soldiers involved Tibet. This is important because the book is taken place around 1950 which is when the PLA soldiers invaded Tibet. Which Shu Wen is trying to find her husband during the same time period. An example of Food is in the novel, “She ate her first Northern- style breakfast: a bowl of hulatang- a glutinous soup made from wheat flour mixed with coarsely chopped pickled greens, pigs offal, and lots of chili powder; cake of maize flour, lump of very salty pickles.” The Reason this quote is picked is because it tells/shows that she hasn’t eaten any type of southern food until this point of the book, which is strange because there had to be something like this back where she lived before she went into the war. Another somewhat custom that deals with food is in Nepalese households, the wife typically serves her husband before the children and herself. The wives usually serve the husband because it shows respect to the husband and shows he is the “Top Dog” in the household.
