Skin Cancer Introduction
The skin does its best on protecting against the heat, injury and infection. Skin helps control body temperature and will store water and fat. Skin Cancer is the abnormal growth of skin cells that usually develops on skin that is exposed to the sun. Typically it can be found on areas such as the scalp, face, lips, ears, neck, chest, arms, hands, and on legs in women (“http://www.skincancer.org”). Less often, this common form of cancer can also occur on areas of your skin which are not ordinarily exposed to sunlight such as your palms, beneath your fingernails or even toenails and genital area (“m.cancer.org”). One of the major cancer cells is basal cell carcinoma. This type of cancer is typically found in areas such as your neck and the face and is sometimes called non melanoma skin cancers. It will appear to look like a pearly or waxy bump, then can change to a flat, flesh colored (or brown) scar-like lesion and are fragile and bleed easily (“http://www.skincancer.org”). Basal cell carcinoma usually grows very slowly and often doesn’t show up for many years after an intense or long-term exposure to the sun (“m.cancer.org”). You can get it at a young age if you have significant exposure to the sun or use tanning beds. The ultraviolet rays from the sun or even from a tanning bed are the major causes of basal cell carcinoma. When the UV rays hit your skin, over time they can damage the DNA inside the skin cells. The DNA holds everything for the way cells grown (“m.cancer.org”). This cancer is unlikely to spread from your skin to other parts of the body, but can move close to a bone or other tissue. Melanoma is cancerous and if not treated, it will damage skin cells and can’t be recovered (www.skincancer.org). It will trigger skin cells to form fast, and cause malignant tumors. It is a cancer of melanocytes and will spread fast to other organs and can be lethal. Melanoma is fatal in about half of the cases it is found in (“Anatomy & Physiology”). It’s been found that an estimated 9,940 people die from this disease in the US alone (www.skincancer.org).Melanoma usually loos like moles and some can even be developed from them as well. They resemble many colors, pink, red, purple, blue or even white. Melanoma has been known to be caused by serious exposure to UV rays, which lead to sunburns. Its heredity, and one in every 10 patients are diagnosed with Melanoma, had a family member with the history of the disease. Once you have the disease, your chances increase of it reoccurring again (www.skincancer.org”). It is estimated that about 73,870 new melanomas will be found in about 42,670 in men, and for women 31,200 (“www.cancer.org”). The rate of melanoma continues to increase for the past 30 years. Melanoma is more common in whites than an African Americans. The lifetime risk of getting the disease is around 2.4% for whites and less than 1% for blacks and Hispanics (www.skincancer.org).
