Situational Irony
Bill Nye once stated: “‘Humor is everywhere in that there’s irony in just about anything a human does”’. Irony is everywhere it is everything that we do. Situational irony is funny and sad and anger. it is the opposite of what was expected. In the “Ransom of Red Chief” the author O. Henry uses situational irony to add a sense of humor to his story. Guy de Maupassant uses situational irony in “The Necklace” to add sympathy to his story. It is obvious that situational irony can be used to create themes and emotions for the readers. In the “Ransom of Red Chief”.the author O. Henry uses situational irony to add humor to his story. For instance a comical effect is created when Red Chief is having so much fun being kidnapped instead of being scared and wanting to leave. Red Chief is having the best time ever being kidnapped. Even when Bill asks him when he wants to leave he says, ‘“Aw what for? I don’t have any fun at home. I hate to go to school”’(41). He wants to stay with Bill he is having fun …show more content…
For example Mathilde always wanted to be rich but she ended up being extremely poor because she had to pay for a replacement necklace for Madame Forestier: “Madame Loisel looked old now. She had become like all the other strong, hard, coarse women of poor households. Her hair was badly done, her skirts were awry, her hands were red” (7). Instead of being rich Mathilde has now become poor and old and ugly. Another reason why sympathy is used to create emotion is Mathilde has to pay off 36,000 francs for losing Madame Forestier’s necklace: ‘“Oh, my poor Mathilde! But mine was imitation. It was worth at the very most five hundred francs!…”’ (8). Mathilde bought Madame Forestier a replacement necklace, but Madame Forestier’s necklace was fake and Mathilde had to live the rest of her life in debt.
