In Good Country People by Flannery O’Connor, the reader follows Joy and Manley who begin to date each other. Joy is missing a leg and has a heart condition, Manley has the same heart condition. They begin to date with their common disability, and Pointer says, "Listen, don't you think some people was meant to meet on account of what all they got in common and all? Like they both think serious thoughts and all?(O’Connor 6), In the end Manley was a human who fell to the dark side of human nature. Manley wanted power and dominance, but he also needed Joy’s trust. In the Cask of Amontillado Montresor has to have Fortunato’s trust before he betrays him. Montresor believes he is avenging his pride and he says, “It is equally unredressed when the avenger fails to make himself felt as such to him who has done the wrong.(Poe 1),” In both these stories Manley and Montresor both have to play this weak slightly stupid character to gain their victims
