Themes are an extremely important component in stories, it is basically the base of the story. The overall purpose of reading a story is because the author has some points to get across. "The theme of a piece of fiction is its view about life and how people behave"(Literature). Each theme focuses on a meaningful aspect in one’s life, something important like morals. Themes also allow all of the readers to have one similar concept, even after they have formed their own opinions. By reading all of the short stories, most of them had similar themes and concepts, however two had powerful and very meaningful themes. The two short stories are 'Sonny's Blues' by James Baldwin and 'A Rose for Emily' by William Faulkner. As far as the plot and the storyline, these two short stories have nothing to do with each other. However, they carry themes that can make the reader be able to compare and also find similarities. Although the plot was very different with both stories isolation, suffering and compassion tied them together. …show more content…
The brother finally contacts Sonny after some time and Sonny goes to live with his brother after he gets out of jail. Throughout the time of Sonny living with his brother, it is evident that they do not understand each other. Sonny tries to leave Harlem so he can escape all of the suffering and drugs. This is mainly because Sonny wants to go follow his dream of being a musician. However, his brother did not agree with Sonny’s decisions which made Sonny say, “I hear you. But you never hear anything I say”(Baldwin). Later in the story, Sonny’s brother finally saw him play and realized where his brother was coming from and truly understood everything Sonny was saying and where he was coming
