Similarities Between Montresor And Fortunato

Before Montresor and Fortunato were on the grounds of the catacombs--one of them with the intent of betraying the other--, the men were nothing but great friends. They were each other's confidant, they were partners in crime, they laughed together, drank together. For a long time, Montresor and Fortunato were like brothers.
However, everything changed in the eyes of Montresor after a ball they both had attended. That night, Montresor's trust on Fortunato dissolved like a snowflake landing on the sidewalks. It shattered like a light bulb falling from the ceiling, never to be the way it was again.
On the night of the ball, men and women swayed as the musicians performed their pieces, the different but beautiful clothing the people wore gave brightness

When he made his way back to Fortunato, however, he hesitated when he saw his friend having a what seemed to be a deep conversation with another man.
Once Montresor recognized the other person to be his friend Angelo, he shuffled to approach them with his lips stretched out into a friendly grin.
"Ah, so the rumors are true." Montresor heard Angelo say from a few feet behind him.
"Of course!" Fortunato admitted proudly as if it was his doing. "The Montresor Family is going bankrupt!"
Montresor had decided to hide in the crowd as he continued to listen in both of his friends' conversation. Fortunato took a sip of his wine, swallowed, and exhaled with his eyebrows narrowed as if he took a bitter pill. Ignorant to Montresor being just within earshot, Fortunato continued, "You better keep your distance from that family, my friend. The more involved you are, the more they'll pull you down with them as they fall."
Montresor couldn't believe what he was hearing, especially coming from his own best friend. His family's problem was a secret he only trusted Fortunato with. Never would Montresor had thought that it would be Fortunato he would be hearing these words
