La Belle Dame Sans Merci and the Great Gatsby are two examples of a beautiful romance gone wrong- in both novels, someone ends up getting hurt. Both authors, although living in completely different time periods, are trying to convey the same message; that even though a relationship feels right, sometimes it couldn’t be more wrong. In La Belle Dame sans Merci, the knight-at-arms recalls the way his lover announcer her feelings for him. He says,”’And sure in a language strange she said- / I love thee true’”. This is similar to the way Daisy told Gatsby,”You always look so cool”. Tom noticed the connection between Gatsby and Daisy at that moment. She didn’t blatantly tell Gatsby she loved him in front of Tom, but they all knew the true meaning behind her words. It was, indeed, a declaration of love in a ‘language strange’. The grieving knight-at-arms tells his witness “‘And this is why i sojourn here / Alone and palely loitering / Though the sedge is withered from the lake / And no birds sing’”. The withered sedge is referring to the wilting plants and dying wildlife. The lack of noise from birds adds to the desolate mood. This is similar to the ending of the Great Gatsby; now that Myrtle, George, and Gatsby are dead and Nick is leaving, Daisy and Tom can go back to their ordinary life like nothing ever happened. There were no ‘singing birds’ to testify to the events leading up to the end of the novel. Nick says at Gatsby’s funeral,”I tried to think about Gatsby for a moment, but he was already too far away”. Even Nick who was there from the beginning to the end couldn’t recall Gatsby. It was almost like he never existed, he just vanished into thin air when nobody was looking and they didn’t even realize he was
