Pinkerton National Detective Agency- This was the biggest law enforcement group in the world, created by Allan Pinkerton in 1850. Businesses hired the Pinkerton Agency to infiltrate unions, supply guards, keep strikers and suspected unionists out of factories, and recruit groups of criminals to intimidate workers. The state of Ohio was so scared of the Pinkerton Agency that it ended up banning the organization. In the Devil in the White City, the Pinkerton Agency infiltrated union plans and stopped strikers. They also tried to find the evidence of Dr. Holmes’s crimes.
F. Samuel Gompers and the A.F.L.- He was an english labor union leader who was born in 1850. He was the president of the American Federation of Labor. The AFL was a national federation of labor unions in the United States. It supported the idea of shorter hours and higher wages.
