This confrontation between Mr. Link Deas and Bob Ewell contributes in demonstrating that Atticus Finch is not alone in believing a man should be judged by his deeds, not the color of his skin. Like Atticus, Link Deas recognizes hard work, honesty, and perseverance as admirable traits. He is therefore able to speak in behalf of Tom Robinson and support his widow, Helen Robinson, when she must provide for her family alone, by offering her employment. When Helen Robinson informs him that Bob Ewell has been harassing her on her way to work, he finds Ewell and tells him that if Ewell continues to harass Helen, Deas will make certain that he suffers the consequences.
