Korea is currently the world’s only divided country despite several countries were reunified at the end of WWII. After WWII in 1945, Korea was divided into North and South at the boundary 38th Parallel. The North and South Korea are officially named the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and the Republic of Korea respectively. Tensions and conflicts between two countries keeps on growing as North Korea is continuously threatening the world by testing its nuclear weapons. This essay will deal with the economic, social and political issues found in North and South Korea.
One of the differences that can be found in the two countries is the life of people. Shin Dong-hyuk (2013) in Escape from Camp 14 (2016) said “My first memory is an execution” (p. 179). North Korea, being one of the few countries still under communist rule, has no human rights. Bush (2002) referred to North Korea as "The Axis of evil" due to its nuclear capabilities. The fifth most scaled nuclear test has been carried out in 2016 and the main reason behind is to show national ‘dignity’, especially reflected on the National Day big celebration. Lee (2016) argued that it is self-deception to believe one can prevail in nuclear war through defensive capabilities alone, and North Korea has a strong desire to up the ante by demonstrating its nuclear prowess and defying international norms against testing. Therefore, North Korean strongly believes the country has definitely seized advantage over the South against the military defeat. To correspond, South Korea has carried out annual military drills and in 2016, the largest ever US- South Korea military drills have been exercised to act as a warning to Pyongyang, North Korea. It was also the first time stimulate scenarios that the regime of Kim Jong-un, has
