In the article entitled “ 4 Myths About Undocumented Immigrants That Are Hurting Feminism” written by Alan Pelaez Lopez, Lopez goes through four myths which surround undocumented immigrants, explains how these myths hurt feminism and how they affect his own life and understanding. Some of the myths which Lopez discusses are the idea that people believe undocumented youth did not migrate of their own free will, during this section he also discusses how the term DREAMer can be a form of oppression. Lopez also explains that not all undocumented people cross the border between the United States and Mexico. He then expands on this topic by reminding readers that not all undocumented immigrants are Latinx, Lopez even explains that he is an immigrant, he is both black and Latinx, and finds it difficult that society sees immigration as only a Latinx issues.…
Chapter’s 6 and 7 of Women’s Voices, Feminist Visions discuss the important topics of Sex, Power, and Intimacy, as well as Reproductive Justice. Although there are many important things discussed in both of these chapters, I feel by far the most relevant topic to my own experiences, is around asexuality. Given my fairly low sex drive, and emphasis on other aspects of relationships (such as shared activities, and companionship), I can identify with some aspects of the asexual community. Besides my personal experiences, however, I commend the authors for bringing to light, and discussing key issues on this important topic.…
Revolutionary Women Summary Generally, when we read about the American Revolution we hear about all the heroic deeds of men like George Washington or Paul Revere. What we don’t often hear about is the many heroic deeds women performed as well. I read the book Women Heroes of the American Revolution, by Susan Casey which told the story of 20 different women. There were lots of women involved in the revolution, whether they quietly resisted the British, spied on them for American militia, or actually joined the men in battle.…
The Awakening is a novel by Kate Chopin about a woman’s transformation from an obedient, traditional wife and mother into a self-realized, sexually liberated and independent woman. Despite now being regarded as a classic, when The Awakening was first published, it received shocked reviews, which the novelist never recovered from. Reviewers were stunned by the protagonist’s sense of independence as well as her sexual liberation. This is due to the fact that at the time, even Louisiana law held that wives were the property of their husbands. This is incorporated and reacted strongly toward in the novel when Victorian society never gives Edna a real shot at achieving personal fulfillment, much less being treated as a real person outside of her…
Previously, I attended a GSWS event with speaker Bonnie Dow from Vanderbilt University. At the event, Dow presented her talk about rhetoric’s in correspondence the Second Wave of Feminism. To explain more in depth, Dow explored the documents that contributed to the various movements and activist groups within the Second Wave. However, she also explains that these rhetorical documents were rather underrepresented. The underrepresentation of these rhetorical documents provided miscommunication of multiple intersectional groups that bloomed during the Second Wave.…
The period that I found the most positive but interesting was the communist revolution and their mindset on women rights. In the article In a Different Voice Male Communist rhetoric on Women’s emancipation it states, “modern feminism in China was a handmaiden of nationalism” (21) An example given of using feminism for nationalism was Mao and Miss Zhao as her suicide was used as state propaganda as it painted Miss Zhao as a victim of out of date practices, in this case arranged marriages. In the Article Feminism appeared to be a state issue, and the government took advantage of the narrative for them to gain support.…
Think about 2016 and the moments in history that have led us to this current day where in a couple of days we will possibly be experiencing the first woman president be inaugurated into office. Women had to come a long way and a lot had to change in order for the Democratic Nominee, Hillary Clinton, to even consider becoming president one day. The effects of women suffrage led to the start of the powerful feminist movement that changed the way women confronted social standards. Warrren K. Leffler points out, the beginning of women’s suffrage began in 1848 when Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott issued a meeting in Seneca Falls Convention in London to talk about “Social, civil, and religious rights of women” as well as to ratify the…
Feminism has been around for many years and will continue to remain part of our immediate future. The term “Votes for Women” was coined in 1872 when the British women were determined to fight for their rights of being treated equally to the male gender. These women eventually were able to receive their rights of voting and therefore make it possible for the women of the twentieth century to exercise their right to vote. Even though this right has been given to the women of now, they still face hardships and unequal rights then that of men.…
In this essay, I will analyze how Clover uses female characters in horror films to display the visible adjustment in terms of gender representation through her various examples in slasher movies. Slasher films invite and target a male audience to identify with the female protagonist. Clover defines slasher films as, “The immensely generative story of a psycho killer who slashes to death a string of mostly female victims, one by one, until he himself is subdued or killed, usually by the on girl who has survived” (195). This “female victim-hero”, who has survived the raft of the villain, is known as the Final Girl.…
Elizabeth Stanton sparked the initial feminist movement in the United States in 1848 with the Seneca Falls Convention. However, the racial turmoil that approached the United States during the coming decades caused the tabling of gender inequality. The Progressive era of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries brought the resurgence of the Women 's Rights Movement. The organizations involved in the first wave of feminism focused on women 's suffrage and succeeded in 1920 with the ratification of the 19th Amendment. The 19th Amendment signified both the end of a 72 year battle for women 's suffrage, as well as the end of the first wave of women 's rights.…
Vampires, werewolves, and monsters of all kinds have been prevalent in the horror genre, but the monstrous-feminine is comparably different. Whereas male monsters shock and terrify the audience through violence and bodily transformations, the female monster is horrifying in relation to her sexuality. The horror genre has frequently perpetuated patriarchal ideologies with scenes objectifying women using the ‘male gaze’ and punishing women for any kind of sexuality. Brian de Palma’s 1976 film adaption of Stephen King’s novel Carrie is no different.…
Feminism isn’t just equality amongst men and women; it can be used to illustrate social, economic, cultural, even political movements. In the novel An Untamed State, men see women as powerless in a country like Haiti where men take advantage of women. The role of feminism is switched when the women display this nature of taking advantage of men emotionally. An Untamed State show that women hold both emotional and social power which is more important than physical dominance that a man can have. Physical actions stem from feeling and emotional reactions, so if women possess that, then they are in complete control.…
Both these women disagreed with their events that they were experiencing, and stood up for what they believe in. This is something that everyone in today’s world should start to do with problems like racial injustice, bullying, and other crimes that need to be…
The Reign of the Feminist “True equality means holding everyone accountable in the same way, regardless of race, gender, faith, ethnicity - or political ideology.” (Monica Crowley). This is especially true for women are beginning to be a true power in this world, with women becoming CEO’S of companies, and running for major offices. People need to realize that times are changing in the twenty-first century for women and today feminism is required to be successful in job fields like politics where women are taking a stand and becoming more assertive, in the home where single mothers who work are still producing children who help society, and in the workplace, where women still need to make a stand to make the same pay and have gender equality.…
Riot Grrrl, a movement, a genre, a community. Riot Grrrl was an underground feminist punk movement that started in the early 1990’s in Washington D.C. It began near the end of 2nd wave feminism that focused primarily on thin, white, middle class, “females” it would lead the very beginnings of the 3rd wave. 3rd wave feminism is the most current wave that is multi sectional, with a common goal of abolishing fat phobia, trans-misogyny, racism, slut shaming, and many more current issues women must deal with. This would be the start of something big that would continue to impact the lives of girls to come.…
