On may 18th, a handful of conservative representatives sat down with Mark Zuckerberg and questioned why facebook has stopped showing conservative ads. They explained that the media will quickly begin to oppose them if they do not show more pro-conservative ads. Mark Zuckerberg denied any such thing. Although facebook platforms can be very bad for public opinion it can also make it very easy for conservatives to target specific types of groups. Facebook can personalize users news feeds using algorithms in order to help them gain votes. In 2008 President Obama's presidential win was called the “Facebook election” In 2008 Social media went viral from all the ads and personalized information that was fed to specific groups of people, for example, African Americans. It was highly beneficial for president Obama because he approached a lot of African Americans within American to vote for two reasons. Because he was the suitable candidate and also he would be the first black president in history. This was also Before facebook was allowed to sell highly targeted ads. You can see in the recent election in November how influential facebook was for all the candidates that ran. This source gives a good overview of the different uses of social media. It is used by political candidates to persuade smaller groups of people which are effective in gathering votes. Facebook, twitter, Instagram are all examples of the benefits of using social media. When discussing the role of social media with electoral campaigns there are two major trends that tend to be present. The role of social media users, meaning the audience of who the candidate is trying to attract, And social media and its practitioners. As for the 2nd trend, scholars have studied how candidates adopted social media as a tool and the success they've gained by using it. The use of social media can go, either way, It can be a very useful tool because it allows you to target specific groups, but it can also be used as a way to ruin the picture of your campaign and also used as propaganda to twist political ideologies.
