A Quest for Man’s Excellence The Sigma Pi fraternity is one of the smallest Greek organizations that Western Illinois has on campus. What this fraternity lacks in size they make up for with their work in the community. What caught my eye about this fraternity are the basic principles that they stand by scholarship, fellowship, and involvement in the community. The Sigma Pi fraternity meets on every Monday to discuss various topics such as finances and events throughout the upcoming weeks. These meetings are formal and led by the six executive board members of the fraternity. All active members of the fraternity are required to be in attendance of these meetings however there are exceptions such as class, work, or family matters. The meeting

Having only seventeen active members in the fraternity makes them one of the smallest fraternities on campus. Given the size of this organization the fraternity prides itself on the concept of brotherhood. Each brother of the fraternity has formed strong bonds with one another, which was apparent in the meeting that I sat in on. The organization utilizes a brotherhood chairman who schedules weekly events aimed at providing the members with quality bonding time with one another. Perhaps the most important element of the fraternity is the organizations involvement in the community. The organization takes pride in getting involved and helping a good cause. Each member of the fraternity is required to put in a minimum of five community service hours per semester and is encouraged to go beyond that number. The organization utilizes a point system to ensure that each member is doing their part and getting involved in charity and on campus. Some of the community service efforts discussed in the meeting included setting up the fallen soldiers 5k, the out of the darkness suicide prevention walk, and fundraising for books to give to an elementary school in town. There are many misconceptions about greek life. Often time’s people hear the word fraternity and automatically think of drinking, partying, and hazing.
