Vinorelbine also known as Navelbine® is an anti-cancer chemotherapy drug. It belongs to a class of chemotherapy drugs called vinca-alkaloids; which can be categorised as spindle poisons1. Vinorelbine and Vindesine are semi-synthetic derivatives from the first generation of vinca-alkaloids; Vinblastine and Vincristine2. These original vinca-alkaloids were derived from dried leaves of the Madagascan periwinkle (vinca rosea) plant1. Madagascar periwinkle is also used in the treatment for diabetes, sore throat, cough, lung congestion and as a diuretic by increasing urine production, therefore decreasing fluid retention3. Vinorelbine is effective for the treatment of various cancers such as non-small-cell lung cancer, metastatic breast cancer, ovarian cancer and it also has promising results in lymphoma and prostatic carcinoma2. It is available as an oral dosage form and an intravenous infusion, where the oral cytotoxic agent has shown to be less efficient but is easily administered; creating a better quality of life for the patient in terms of not having to visit hospital for treatment.
