In the United States, doctors tend to pre-induce patients because they think that the baby is overdue when, in reality, the fetus can be carried for a few more weeks. The ACOG, the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, recommends that pre-induced labor should not occur before 39 weeks because of the risk of cesarean section and decreased fetal outcomes (“Reasons to Induce Labor”). Expecting mothers should not be induced early unless there is a medical reason that will put the baby or the mother in danger. A late term ultrasound should not be used as a main reason to induce labor because ultrasounds become a less reliable source of measurement in weight and due date the closer the baby is to being born. The standard error of a baby’s weight can vary two pounds using an ultrasound; therefore, it is difficult to determine the actual weight and due date of the child (“Reasons to Induce Labor”). Doctors, as well as expecting mothers, should not use the excuse the baby is overdue as the sole reason for a pre-induction. Unless there is harm toward the mother or the child or the baby has been carried for an absurd amount of time, the baby should be carried to full term and until the mother has gone into natural
