Shylock Inhumane Analysis

Firstly, Shylock is treated in an inhumane way. Antonio is at Shylock’s house, trying to get a loan from him. Then, Shylock angrily replies with: “Fair sir, you spat on Wednesday last, you spurn’d me such a day, another time you call’d me dog: and for these courtesies I’ll lend you thus much monies” (1.3.121-124). Clearly, Shylock shows he is not happy with Antonio as his previous experiences with him were not pleasant. He was spat on, insulted, and treated like a dog. If one was previously mistreated, they would definitely be hesitant to have trust in that person. This is exactly what happens in Shylock’s case, therefore, he knows that Antonio cannot be trusted which ultimately shows that he does not want to lend Antonio money. Therefore, Shylock shows that he is upset at Antonio for treating him in a way a human would not be treated.
Later, Shylock is humiliated in court. Antonio is discussing Shylock’s punishment with the court. “So please my lord the duke and all the court to quit the fine for one half of his goods, I am content, so he will let me have the other half in use, to render it upon his death unto the gentlemen that lately stole his

Salanio is repeating what Shylock was angry about. “My daughter! O my ducats! O my daughter! Fled with a Christian! Oh my Christian ducats! Justice! The law! My ducats and my daughter! A sealed bag, two sealed bags of ducats, stolen from me by my daughter!” (2.8.15-19). Shylock is clearly upset, angry and depressed that his only daughter betrayed him. If one’s father was betrayed by his only daughter, he would be devastated. In Shylock’s case, this is true. Jessica stole his ducats which must have completely broke his heart as Shylock thought he had trust in his daughter. Jessica also stole Shylock’s precious ring from him, which must have left him devastated. Clearly, Shylock is a victim of a crime his daughter, Jessica, made in the

This point of view is reasonable because during a major part of the play, Antonio and Shylock barter for what the price should be if Antonio doesn’t his money back in time. When they come to a conclusion, Antonio says, “[Shylock]... he grows kind” (Act I, scene iii). This shows that Antonio began to think higher of Shylock and this was not an act of anti-semitism. However, this is incorrect because this may have been the only time Antonio was kind to Shylock in the whole play.…
