The US government should reduce defense spending because threats to global security have been decreasing, it creates anti-American sentiment, and the current costs are too high. The US should reduce defense spending because the sheer size of the US military cost a lot. America has over 800 military bases outside of its borders. Maintaining 800 military bases costs 100 billion dollars of taxpayer money annually. In comparison the department of Education only spends about 71 billion dollars annually (Harris). The US does not need 800 military bases abroad to show power. We have 11 U.S. Navy carrier battle groups. A single battle group can handle terrorism and piracy. Also, a single carrier group has enough nuclear weapons in its arsenal to turn any nation of the Middle East into a radioactive wasteland (Eddlem).
