According to Encyclopædia Britannica, a bullfight is broken down into three main acts which are called terceros, or thirds in Spanish. In the first act the banderillero teases the bull without violent intentions. Then a picador stabs gently at the bull only a couple of times for that is all that is allowed. This is to put the bull through the least amount of pain. In the second act the banderilleros stick dart like object, called the banderilla, in between the shoulder blades. The purpose of these is not to gouge the bull in any matter, but to irritate it or get it riled up for the final act. The killing is for the matador only and hurting the bull too much would result in something not adequate for the matador. This is why the hooked part of the banderilla only goes underneath the skin. By the time of the third act, the bull is irritated to an extent. At this time, after a few final charges from the bull, the matador stabs the bull with a curved sword between the shoulders that goes directly to the heart, giving the bull the least pain possible(Bullfighting). This is to kill the bull in honor and humanly. If anything goes wrong, such as the matador missing the heart, a dagger would be stabbed through the brain, killing it instantly so it does not have to suffer.
