Life in prison is not a punishment. When people think of life in prison some people think it’s laid back or easy. If someone has committed a serious crime, for example killing somebody in cold blood, they could get life in prison. “The Death Penalty Prevents Future Murder,” “Even though statistical demonstrations are not conclusive, and perhaps cannot be, capital punishment is likely to deter more than other punishments because people fear death more than anything else” (1). What this guy is saying is that the penalty stops people from committing horrendous crimes because people fear death more than they fear being put in prison for life. Having a harsher punishment deters people from doing something that will punish them horribly they will think twice. David Muhlhausen states in his article "Capital Punishment Works: It Deters Crime," "Studies of the death penalty have reached various conclusions about its effectiveness in deterring crime. But... the majority of studies that track effects over many years and across states or counties find a deterrent effect" (David 1). David is saying that having the death penalty does, in fact, have an effect on people. People who watch other people commit the crimes are more likely to think about what choices they make.
