Open play means that the sport is played on a pitch or field or another form of boundaries with both teams or players playing at the same time to try and score. To answer this question we must first decide whether not a lot of the defined sports are open play. Football and Rugby for example, are both played on a pitch, trying to obtain possession of a ball and score, clearly open play. Tennis, again, open play is used because both or all 4 players are trying to hit the ball so that the opponents can’t return it. This is open play because the game is ‘live’ and anyone can score at any point. On the other side is golf, this is not open play because each player takes turns and each player's shots do not impact the other players shots. This is the same for darts and bowling. Another example is some disciplines of skiing or mountain biking in which the opponent can't change the result of your run. The other styles of these sports have opponents that can impact the results because they all race at the same time, also being defined as open play. Over all, sports don’t really have to be open play. Does this back up my point that anything could be a sport? Yes it
