For a long time, there has been a lot of controversy woman's maternity leave. The conflict has been whether the woman’s time should be shorter or longer. Maternity leave is the time a woman takes off work after having given birth to a child. Currently, the average time frame for each woman to get off work is 12 weeks. There are two sides to the debate about maternity leave, the people that say women need more time off and people that say they need less time. The people against maternity leave will say that the time women get off is already enough, but they need more time to heal and bond with their children without the added stress of work.
Maternity leave should be longer because women who are working while taking care of their child can face emotional and physical challenges. As reported by Health Land Time, “Women with 3-month-old infants who worked full time reported feeling greater rates of depression, stress, poor health and overall family stress than mothers who were able to stay home.” This proves that women do need more time off so that when they go back to work they can be mentally and physically stable. Currently, the infant mortality rate in the United States per 1,000 births is 5.8.(“Central Intelligence Agency”) According to Science Daily, “For each additional month of paid maternity leave offered in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), infant mortality is reduced by 13%.” Infant mortality is when child dies before his or her 1st birthday. (“CDC”) So, the longer a child spends with its mother during the first year means a better chance of surviving infant
