Colleges Should Strive For Freedom and Diversity
Political Correctness in Colleges does not allow for academic freedom or intellectual diversity. I see College as a place where one can spread their wings and engage in an environment full of opportunities to grow and thrive. As students are being cultured into the leaders of tomorrow, all view points should be gladly accepted. It should not be a place where we are told what to believe and what is accepted. Colleges should focus on encouraging debate, group acceptance, and the proper reaction to adversity.

Let’s face it; high school fosters a somewhat protective environment. We were probably not exposed to many different types of people. But there are so many different ages, races, cultures, religions, and beliefs on a college campus. Once we get to college, it is time to start opening our eyes and forming realistic views of this world. It’s a time we begin realizing that not everyone is like us, and has the same morals and beliefs. Colleges should not try to protect students from adversity or from hearing what offends us, but rather teach the best way to process it and respond to it. The real world may not always be as safe as our college campus, but we can start preparing to face the varied opinions of everyone. When we get out into the work force, we don’t want that to be our first experience with any form of discrimination whether is it against us or we are the ones discriminating. We need to learn how to deal with common issues like sexism, racism, or homophobia. There is, however, a fine line between standing up for what you believe in and blasting someone because their views are different. We must learn to accept other’s beliefs whether we agree with them or not. We can not accomplish this if the college has everyone in a bubble protecting us from
