“Censor” according to Webster's Dictionary means“ to examine in order to suppress or delete anything considered objectionable. Its central characteristic is the suppression of an idea or image because it offends or disturbs someone, or because they disagree with it.” Censoring textbooks and school literature isn't a correct way to prevent “inappropriate” content from falling into kids hands and it causes more harm to kids than it does good. Some of the books that were banned or censored according to (Allison Flood of the Guardian paragraph 3) consist of A Birthday Cake For George because it depicts an “Upbeat depiction of slaves lives”. Censorship is usually because of language, sexual content, religious reasons and cultural beliefs therefore parents should not censor their children's textbooks and literature unless it is very explicit or if it should be age restricted. The act of censorship is …show more content…
For example some books are banned for explicit sexual content. One example provided by (bannedbooksweek.org (#3) is Beloved by Toni Morrison), which banned because of “And again and again, parental complaints are lodged against the book because of its violence, sexual content.” Sure it might be good to not let elementary schoolers read this but most of these books had barely anything bad the people who banned them were too sensitive. A major influential book that was banned is Of Mice and Men by John Stienbeck, and according to (PBS #2) “Challenges have included complaints about ‘profanity,’ morbid and depressing themes”. This is a good book to teach and should not be banned because it has important messages and themes and should be part of highschool literature. The people that claim this would have a point on banning it if it was being taught to elementary school but its to high schoolers and is perfectly fine for their

One book that is included on the banned book list is James and the Giant Peach by Henry Selick. The book is about a boy named James who, after the unfortunate death of his parents thanks to a rhino, is forced to live with his cruel aunts- Spiker and Sponge. For years, James, who was merely 4 when he moved in with his aunts, was starved, beaten, forced to sleep on the floor in the attic, and treated like a nuisance.…

The reasons most books are banned is because it put the pure innocence of children at risk. Which is a valid fear of a parent to have, but it is also important to make sure children are prepared for the real world and all that come with it, good and bad. In teaching these banned books with controversial topics, we are not only educating about the history of these afflictions, but teaching how them how to cope with and fight against them in life. It is impossible to teach someone right from wrong without mentioning the wrongs. I believe teaching these banned books is important to the civic engagement of the children of the future as well as their total…

Censorship affects society as a whole and its overuse leads to an inept sense of communication and ignorance. Censorship depletes literary merit to prevent outrage and discussion about emotionally charged issues. To Kill a Mockingbird is a commonly banned book most likely because of the blatant displays of racism that might offend some students or parents. To Kill a Mockingbird is a milestone in maturity; we as a society have to learn how to discuss sensitive subjects like racism because we will face issues like this as time goes on. The list of banned classics that are begging to be discussed grows each year with books like The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian for cultural…

Often times parents will challenge a book for its language and the violence present in the book, because they want to keep their child innocent and protected from the wrongs of the world. While it is a understandable concern, it is ridiculous considering what the average high schooler sees and hears in the halls of their school on a daily basis. Parents like this wanted to ban A…

There are the main things such as being sexually explicit, having vulgar language, or not being suited for that age group. Then there are others that are banned for the talk of the extraterrestrial and witchcraft. In the many years people have been challenging books, many have made it to court such as Minarcini v. Strongsville City School District, Mozert v. Hawkins County Board of Education, and one of the most famous, Board of Education v. Pico. All of these cases were brought up because someone had a problem with the writing of a novel. Pico was mainly brought up for religious reasons against books such as Go Ask Alice by Beatrice Sparks and Down These Mean Streets by Piri Thomas.…

When I was little, I was taught that "stupid was a bad word. If you said the word "stupid" in kindergarten in front of a teacher, you were immediately reprimanded and sent to the corner and your parents were told. Maybe, a little bit of an overreaction. Because while stupid may not be the nicest thing to call someone, there's definitely worse . Now of course as I grew up…

What we say and how we say things can often impact not only ourselves, but also the people around us as well. That is why knowing when something is right or wrong is so important, because the worst thing you can do is offend someone when you weren’t trying to offend them. The topic of right and wrong when it comes to speaking is often times a bumpy road, that is why I feel that Professor Miles did a great job of not only navigating that road, but also providing a lot of great evidence to support her idea about the censorship we use today in our school settings. And it's because of the great examples she uses that I also agree with her that in some cases too much censorship is causing more harm than actual good.…

Censorship is unnecessary Censorship is the control of the ideas and information within a society. Dictatorships all throughout history have used censorship to keep people living there (gilc.org). Censorship is a very broad term, but it is control of the ideas and information within a society. In a world like today the government is dictating what we see and they are censoring us and breaking the first amendment in the constitution. Other governments are censoring entertainment because it does not agree with what their government agrees with.…

I think that censorship is when in books, movies, t.v shows, or videos has something bad in it. For example in shows, movies, or videos if there is bad words they beep the bad words out. But in books you can’t beep it out so they probably make the book banned. People have to read through books before they allow students to read them. Also, teachers have to watch movies or video clips before they show them to the class.…

The choice about which books should be banned has a big impact on how people think and their level of maturity. Someone who is careless and not mature might get the wrong meaning of the book and find it inappropriate or insulting and would challenge the book to be banned. But, someone is mature enough to actually know what the author of the book is trying to get at will more likely understand the message the author is giving out. For example, the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was banned in 1885 for insulting language: “Miss Watson’s big…

Censorship is the control of what people can say, hear, write, read, see, or do. Most of the time censorship occurs from the government. There is censorship everywhere, in schools, on television, and at the store. Students in schools aren’t being allowed to read certain books due to the fact that some parents and teachers think the books are too inappropriate or too mature for students. On the television certain things aren’t allowed, like nudity, curse words, or things involving death.…
