Don’t Censor Dick and Jane Censorship of art has been discussed for hundreds of years. Even today, art is still being looked through the scope of censorship. Many would say censoring art is taking away a basic right of freedom of speech and artistic expression. Others would say that censorship is a priority in protecting a viewer’s emotional harm and physical harm. Though art can cause much controversy, it is important to not censor art because this would mean taking away a valuable message and an artist’s form of expression. One particular piece that should not have been censored was “School Days” by Linda Cunningham, that was originally entered to be placed in The Emerald Art Center

School Shootings Are Not Enough for Stronger Gun Control Laws The Jonna Semeiks article “We the People Confront Sandy Hook” discuses many different factors that contribute towards explaining why school shootings and gun violence are inadequate to inspire stronger gun control laws. The deaths of children are not enough to offset the strong ties that American society has towards guns as a symbol of freedom, which causes people to respond with internal defense mechanisms that numb the pain of these tragic events instead of feeling a need to take corrective action. Semeiks presents a valid point that gun control reforms are needed; however, in order for that to happen anytime soon, the American people will need to largely shift their attitude on this topic. The author provides several examples successfully supporting that main idea.…

First, Captain Beatty misquotes the Constitution of the Unites States stating “We must all be alike…not everyone born free and equal, as the Constitution says, but everyone made equal” (Brown). Beatty is actually quoting the Declaration of Independence not the Constitution. Bradbury emphasizes “the power of language and the tyranny of its miss use, censorship, or absence” (Brown). The second point illustrated by Captain Beatty was that the government did not organize censorship but various minority groups who did not want material they found offensive published. However, 1984 does make a few good points when it comes to what should be hidden from public view. Some of the most common things censored are nudity and pornography, profanity, racial slurs, and other sensitive topics.…

Chris Crutcher argues in his article, “How They Do It”, that school systems should not become easily persuaded by the parents’ complaints to censor books that should be a part of the curriculum that their children benefit from due to the fact that the students can relate, learn, and build off of the books that are censored. Crutcher builds his argument throughout his article by including the use of personal anecdotes, pathos, and repetition. Due to the fact that Crutcher includes the use of personal anecdotes, he supports his argument. He builds his argument with the use of personal stories in hope to engage the readers.…

After numerous attempts of censoring obscene and/or immoral artwork, artistic censorship had little to no impact in its purpose of protecting citizens. Traditionally, the Canadian courts have intervened in efforts of upholding public values, which have often surrounded the protection of women, children, and vulnerable minorities from potential harm. “Harm,” as defined by the courts, concerns the person’s tendency “to act in an anti-social manner” in response to viewing obscene or immoral material, such as the physical mistreatment of women, men, and children. However, despite such a statement, there is no direct proof of harm caused by pornography, or its depiction in controversial artwork. Peter Collins, a forensic psychiatrist at Toronto’s Clarke Institute of Psychiatry, stated that it was his “clinical…
