This question is intended to present a casual start the interview and to know where the author grow up. The place one grew up and lived may have different effects to his or her view point about culture, society, and their own identity. For example, people that grew up in a relatively wealthier community will have a different view about the world from people that grew up in a relatively poorer community. I think that this question is more specific, but I think that this question still allow the author to answer in an open ended way. The University of Washington is a diverse community. There are people from all over the world with different backgrounds waiting to be discovered. Not all people are open to be interviewed and to be the interviewee (often because it is awkward and I do not want to bother anyone), but sometimes I like to engage in small conversation and learn something from it.
